ecopa SSCT Workshop and General Assembly, 14-16 June 2017 ecopa warmly invites you to the ecopa SSCT Workshop in Helsinki, Finland 14-16 June 2017, on the subject of Up-to-date in vitro approaches in regulatory risk assessment and disease modelling. In addition to three scientific sessions, there will be Student Sessions where students are encouraged to present their results, and Technical Workshops organised by industry and other stakeholders. More information is available on the Workshop website. Please note that the deadline for abstracts is 31 March 2017. ecopa will hold its annual General Assembly during the meeting, on Wednesday 14 June 2017, 5-7 p.m.

New Board appointed for ecopa At the 16th General Assembly in Linz on 22 September 2015, a new Board was appointed for ecopa for the next two years and new statutes were approved. More information here.

New AXLR8 Report: Alternative Testing Strategies – Progress Report 2011 The EU FP7-funded co-ordination project AXLR8 has announced the availability of the publication Alternative Testing Strategies: Progress Report 2011 & AXLR8-2 Workshop Report on ‘A Roadmap to Innovative Toxicity Testing’. The 2011 report includes: An introduction to the AXLR8 project An update on the activities and achievements of 3Rs-oriented projects funded under the health and environment themes of the 6th and 7th EU Research Framework Programmes during the year 2010 The AXLR8-2 workshop report, including contributions from workshop presenters and reports from break-out groups AXLR8 Scientific Panel recommendations for future research and innovation funding A directory of key projects and coordinators. Given the substantial and increasing global investment in research aimed at developing new safety assessment methods and implementing the 3Rs in toxicology, there is a recognised need for better information exchange and transparency in this research area. AXLR8 provides the tools for effective real-time dialogue, information exchange, problem solving, and international cooperation. The AXLR8 2011 Report is available for download from the AXLR8 website. A limited number of hard copies are also available by contacting the AXLR8 administration .

Final START-UP report is now available The final report of the FP7-funded support action START-UP (Scientific and Technological Issues in 3Rs Alternatives Research in The Process of Drug Development and Union Politics) are now available. Developed on the initiative of ecopa and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with collaboration from several NCPs, the aim of START-UP was to identify and make recommendations to abolish bottlenecks in the 3Rs approach in pharmaceutical discovery and development. ECHA releases report on use of non-animal methods & testing strategies under REACH The European Chemicals Agency has published two major reports on the working of REACH and CLP Regulations and on the implementation and use of non-animal test methods and testing strategies. ecopa participates in new ECVAM Stakeholder Forum

ecopa participates in new ECVAM Stakeholder Forum ecopa has been selected by the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods to be represented on the newly constituted ECVAM Stakeholder Forum (ESTAF) by board member and 3Rs expert Troy Seidle. As announced in the January newsletter, ESTAF has been established to bring together ECVAM stakeholders who operate at EU-level to promote enhanced communication, engagement and transparency. Members of ESTAF include industry associations, research foundations, and civil society and non-governmental organisations. The first meeting of ESTAF took place on 27 May in Ispra, Italy. Updates from future ESTAF meetings will be disseminated via the ecopa website and quarterly newsletter.

EC-industry project aims to develop non-animal methods for repeated dose toxicity testing 1-3 March marked the official kick-off of the €50 million European Commission-COLIPA ‘Safety Evaluation Ultimately Replacing Animal Testing’ (SEURAT) programme aimed at replacement of current repeated dose systemic toxicity testing in human safety assessment. The meeting brought together the coordinators of the seven new large-scale and projects, as well as the leaders of ongoing projects funded under the health theme of the 6th and 7th EU Research Framework Programmes. 2010 Alternative Testing Strategies Progress Report Released The EU-sponsored coordination project AXLR8 announces the availability of the publication Alternative Testing Strategies: Progress Report 2010. The 2010 progress report includes: An introduction to the AXLR8 project An update on the activities and achievements of 3Rs-oriented research funded under the Health theme of the European Union’s 6th and 7th Research Framework Programmes during the year 2009. Contributions from EU member state 3Rs centres and from international colleagues who participated in the 2010 AXLR8 Scientific Workshop and public Info Forum. Observations by the independent AXLR8 Scientific Panel on the status of EU and international 3Rs research and development activities. Suggestions for near-term research priorities to advance the science of toxicity testing, as well as EU legislative mandates in relation to the 3Rs. Given the substantial and increasing global investment in research aimed at developing new safety assessment methods and implementing the 3Rs in toxicology, there is a recognised need for better information exchange and transparency in this research area. AXLR8 provides the tools for effective real-time dialogue, information exchange, problem solving, and international cooperation. The 2010 Progress Report may be downloaded electronically from AXLR8.eu/publications. In addition, a limited number of hard copies are available upon request from the AXLR8 secretariat.

European Commission Announces Transatlantic Partnership with US EPA On 6 October, the European Commission announced the establishment of a transatlantic partnership between the Joint Research Centre and the US Environmental Protection Agency to exchange research materials and results useful for the development of integrated methods for predicting chemical toxicity.
